Pope Francis

As you are now aware, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina became the 266th Bishop of Rome on Wednesday, March 13th. He chose Francis of Assisi as his papal name. He is the first Pope to have originated from the Americas.

In reading the news stories of his elevation to the Papacy, many believed his selection was a surprise, as a younger man or a Cardinal from another continent might have been chosen. Nonetheless, Pope Francis has excited the congregation by his devotion to help the poor and downtrodden in their daily struggles. This past week we also witnessed his personal outpouring of humility, recognized by many as a glimpse of his true character.

Many in the world today seek a profound and virtuous soul to help guide and protect them from a broken civilization. At the Installment Mass on Tuesday, Pope Francis was inspired by Saints that symbolize attributes of grace, charity and simplicity. By following the examples of those before us, we can be inspired to lead profound, obedient and lives of purpose.

The sprit of discernment has captivated the Cardinals with the selection of Pope Francis. Will the world embrace the newest member to emulate the convictions of a beloved Saint?

A Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Cardinal Bergoglio chose St. Francis as his papal name due to his overwhelming love and devotion to the poor and those suffering around us. When we need comfort and solace in our daily lives, St. Francis offers us the courage to face our trials with faith and perseverance. Despondency and sadness can be conquered by our understanding there are times in our lives where pain leads us to Christ. The prayer best known to heal our divisions is recited for us all:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon, Where there is doubt, faith,

Where there is despair, hope, Where there is darkness, light

 and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive - It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

 Shine On Hollywood

I am able to voice my recommendations as a member of a committee, devoted to offer guidance in the publication of an online magazine, Shine On Hollywood. Since July of last year, Shine On has become an exceptional periodical. Diverse members of the entertainment industry are interviewed and acknowledged for their participation, to help overcome a perception or stigma of incongruity within their community.

My attempt is not to generalize, unfortunately Hollywood is perceived as a conglomeration of participants devoted in their production of prurient content where sex, drugs, greed, violence and all additional forms of depravity are to be explored. Studio executives concentrate their efforts in developing motion pictures and television programming of questionable value, due to the billions in income generated by its promotion. The profits earned by the decadent morass of film, has contributed to the ongoing damage we as a society suffer by its consequences. When young minds are subjected with the chronic proliferation of visual and verbal abuse, we see the effects of a generation stymied by a desire to live healthy and integrity driven lives.

While the perception of Hollywood as a contributor to the overall unraveling of the nation's morals can be considered valid, one needs to look deeper as there are many members in the industry fighting to restore decency and balance by their humble contributions.

Arnold Garcia, the founder and publisher of Shine On Hollywood magazine and a friend for many years, is making a difference, by highlighting the individuals involved in entertainment professions that inspire and create lasting impressions. There are artists unknown to the general public that have prospered in establishing a higher calling for their work. Their lives continue in the background, only to be discovered by a magazine thrilled to share their stories in a community that needs to hear their voices.
