A DISTANT COUNTRY
September 23rd, 2013 5:54 PM

Dear Friends,

I was awakened at midnight from a deep sleep by the sound of a helicopter swirling above my neighborhood and indeed above my house! It took me at least 2 hours to fall asleep again, only to be awakened at 6:00 AM from the distant sound of police sirens. I've been living in this community since June of 1995 and I've heard, viewed and participated in a good number of invigorating activities. This ongoing example where sleep deprivation can alter a sunny disposition, has made me ponder the changes that have occurred here in Los Angeles, this state and most importantly, my ability to reflect on friends and acquaintances I've met throughout the years.

My neighbors are engaging, respectful and for the most part keep to themselves. It is a middle class neighborhood where many of the properties were constructed in the early 1930's and continues to impress by the quality of its craftsmanship. A mix of various nationalities have settled here and pride of ownership in their homes is well represented. Considering the turmoil of communities either too close or too far from where I live, I am grateful to have a roof over my head and enjoy the comforts of self imposed exile in a sanctuary I can designate and call home.

The weather in Los Angeles by all accounts is superb! It's always sunny and sometimes too hot for my liking but you rarely have the humidity which would add to a level of great discomfort. From my home I can walk to one of the major supermarkets in town. Every year food prices continue to climb but I pride myself on being a frugal shopper and do my best to find the best bargains. I am a regular customer at the nearest bargain store and I've become good friends with the cashiers over the years. I also bank at a major institution nearby but their staff and tellers change often and an opportunity to develop a relationship is thereby diminished.

Los Angeles offers numerous opportunities in dining. There are so many restaurants and diners to choose from! I have my favorites that I've patronized over the years and I'm rarely given a menu as I know all the dishes by heart!

The state of California has its share of pristine beaches, breathtaking scenery of mountains, valleys and natural wildlife. It's agriculture production of fruits and vegetables surpasses many other locales while the vineyards in Napa Valley produce the most exquisite and fine wines known throughout the world.

The entertainment industry where motion picture, television and music production has its origins, contribute to the US economy by its global presence. At first glance, one can argue that California's impressive facts and statistics are interpreted in a manner that utilizes support for a direction that offer prosperity and peace of mind. Unfortunately, once any independent observer has the ability to review the entire picture, life in the Golden State is not as golden as it seems.

In an upcoming TeamBlog, I will spend the time and energy required to focus on the challenges of a state that has become a distant country.

Thanks Again
